About Water Heater Burners and Pilots
For both water heater burners and water heater pilot assemblies, PlumbersStock carries trusted brands. If your hot water heater is having difficulty functioning, these parts are common issues. The good news is it's relatively easy to replace these water heater parts, but there is a little bit of grunt work required to make sure they are your issue.
What Causes a Pilot Assembly to Break?
Pilot assemblies—though more hardy than some of the other lighting methods you’ll find for a water heating system—are still among the most fragile components a water heater possess; thus, the question shouldn’t be “what breaks it?” but “what doesn’t break it?” Alas, this is just a fact of life you’ll have to deal with—particularly as your water heater gets older.
When to Replace?
Another thing that you need to keep in mind is that water heater pilot lights go out. And this doesn’t always mean that it’s broken! In fact, it’s the easiest fix in the world, because it’s just a matter of lighting it again. Here are just a few pointers on determining whether or not a pilot light is broken:
- Can You Re-Light: If your pilot light is out, try lighting it! Simply turn the gas regulator knob to Pilot, press it and hold it down, then press the button labeled ignition to ignite the pilot (or apply a long necked barbecue lighter flame to the pilot itself). If, after holding the regulator knob for a minute and turning it to “ON” once you do so, it stays on (and keeps staying on), then you are okay. If not, well, you may need a new pilot assembly.
- Does it Keep Going Out: If your water heater pilot light keeps going out, even after you successfully light it, you may need a new system. However, make sure you check to see if your flue is letting downdrafts in before replacing, as this may be the case instead.
What Is a Water Heater Burner Assembly?
Burners, on the other hand, are used to warm the water within the heater’s tank. These go bad quite frequently, as well, and must often be replaced. If your pilot light is working fine, then make sure to check and see if the water heater burner is adjusted correctly or if it is actually working. If it’s not, it may be time to replace it.
